The Quilt Shop Cuckoo Clock

Made in Germany its the real thing! And it’s animated: The cuckoo’s call triggers the quilter to cut and the kitty to jump with joy! It’s the perfect clock for quilters!

Crafted to resemble quaint buildings, the cuckoo clocks Jodie Davis collected over the years made her long for one designed after one of her favorite places: a quilt shop. Her dream became a reality when she contacted the Schneider Cuckoo Clock Company of Schonach Germany. She pitched her crazy idea and they said go!

Like every cuckoo clock, on the hour and half hour the cuckoo emerges to proclaim the time. But on this clock the cuckoo precipitates a chain of actions. The quilter’s arm moves to rotary cut the fabric painted on the table, the kitty jumps up and down on a stack of fabric bolts and a chimney sweep pops out of the chimney.

The clock’s pendulum is, naturally, a spool of thread.

Jodie designed the quilts by the door of the clock using Electric Quilt 5. She scanned and emailed catalog images of a rotary cutter and fabric bolts to help the sculptors in Germany carve the props.

Hand made in the heart of the Black Forest, the quilt shop cuckoo clock is created by skilled craftspeople, with some of the stages of manufacture taking place in their homes as has been the tradition for over a hundred of years.

I actually have one of the originals. Great back story to this clock and this really talented clock designer. I videotaped her in Germany as she meticulously planned this clock. She amazed her television crew, and impressed the generations old Anton Schneider factory personnel completely. This clock of mine keeps on ticking and has been since 2006. Perfect! It gets a lot of comments from guests and watching it and hearing it in action never gets old. Good, authentic clocks are a nice touch in the home. Not many people have cuckoo clocks anymore. Such a shame.

  2. Janet Moody

I agree with the above review. It makes me smile everytme I hear it or look at it. It hangs proudly in my sewing room. Many complements on it!! Would definitely recommend!!

I was lucky enough to receive my 8 day just in time for our late Christmas. I couldn’t be more pleased. It came really well packaged to prevent shipping damage and had clear step by step instructions on how to unpack and set it up. I had to settle for the jumping kitty instead of the doggy whch I preferred, but Jodie has been in touch and assures me that she will send one as soon as they are weend and that putting it in place is something I can do easily.
    What a lovely sound!!

    • JOdieRD (verified owner)

Yes Shannon, my carver Lance had a record-breaking Christmas, so he wasn’t able to supply me with dogs when I saw how big the demand was. So I’ll send you the dog for your clock when I receive it from him. It simply slips onto a wire, so yes, super easy to install. I’m so glad you’re happy with the clock!
      ~Jodie

  4. Harolyn Small (verified owner)

Wow, this clock is adorable and perfect for a quilt studio. I feel so lucky to have been able to get one of these cuckoo clocks. The clock came perfectly packaged with clear directions. Be sure your clock is level before you start the clock. I love mine!

    • JOdieRD (verified owner)

Thanks for your kind words Harolyn! Your insight into leveling the clock is helpful. I checked and it is in the instructions, but I beefed it up with another sentence. I think maybe a page on my site “Oh No! I Set Up My Cuckoo And It’s Not Working!” might help to. On the to-do list.
So glad you’re pleased with your clock!
      Jodie

  5. Helen (verified owner)

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Quilt Shop Cuckoo. It has been perfect right out of the box. I feel like my room is complete now and this little bird keeps me smiling all day long. I couldn’t be happier. In todays time, it’s not often that you receive a product that works 100% like it should. This is one that I can highly recommend.

  6. Esther Gravel

I’m in love with my Quilt Shop cuckoo clock. I smile when I come in my bedroom. I think that’s a good place to have a cuckoo clock. It looks like if the clock is saying “Home sweet home” 😉 Why not? Cuckoo calls don’t disturb my sleep at all. Thank you for your very fast shipping! I recommend any of your fantastic clocks to everybody. Wish you a great success with you next designs!

    • JOdieRD (verified owner)

    Love it, love it,Love it

Oh Shirley I’m so glad that you are so happy with the clock! So the red hair was okay? I need to add that as an option on the site. Thanks for suggesting it!

  8. Bob Nawa

My wife ( a lover of old clocks) decided it was time to get all the old cuckoo clocks we packed away when we moved a number of years ago on a wall in our log cabin home, we put up 10 of them. While researching one of them I came across this site. My wife is an avid quilter so I wanted an 8 day quilt shop cuckoo for a Christmas (2018) present for her. Unfortunately Jodie did not have any but offered to have one converted but it would take some time. It was ready several months later just in time for her birthday. Jodie went out of her way to get this cuckoo converted, shipped to me in an unmarked box, and several other specials. I got it in her quilt studio along with a new Juki tl18qvp early (1 am) to surprise her when she went to her studio. You should have seen the look on her face when she opened the cuckoo. She did not even get to other gift before taking down a small wall hanging so the cuckoo had a home. It was up and running within two hours and she just enjoys it. I think it was a bigger hit than the Juki. It was easy to set up and it is keeping excellent time. Thanks again Jodie for making the surprise happen

  9. Diane Nunley

My home sounds like a clock shop, with several Black Forest clocks chiming throughout the hour. My Quilt Shop cuckoo is of the same beautiful, fine quality expected of these types of clocks, the workmanship exemplary of typical German engineering. It has kept perfect time and I love to sit nearby while I handstitch, enjoying the quiet soothing tic-too of the mechanism. The 8 day wind is perfect for me and worth the wait to receive it. I love it as much as my other clocks—maybe more because of my fellow quilter in the midst of her own stash, threads, and kitty! I’m positive she has a fleet of Bernina machines just like me, too.

    • Jodie Davis

Thank you for the kind words Diane.
For those who don’t know, the clock’s existence is thanks to Bernina. One of the shows I was hosting in 2006 in the earl days of QNNtv was invited to Bernina in Switzerland to shoot an episode. I saw an opportunity to get behind the scenes in a cuckoo clock factory by shooting a second episode. But I had an ulterior motive. When the cameras were about to roll I suggested that we turn the chalet clock they were going to demonstrate making into a quilt shop. They bit! The hag wielding a rolling pin became our sweet quilter and the beer drinkers turned into a cute kitty. In order to have one for myself I had to import the minimum. 99 other quilters were as cuckoo as I and wanted to have one. A business was born! Thank you Bernina 😉
